Apple Mail: Screen Flash When New Email Arrives

I just got new MacBook Pro with Lion OS X and forgot about its inability to flash the screen when new email arrives.  So I had to go back to this site and review.  I thought you guys might like this, in case you’re looking for the same thing!

Excerpted from: http://www.deafmac.org/blog/2009/screen-flash-for-mail/

1) Download the AppleScript file I created (it’s in a ZIP format).

2) If beep.zip doesn’t extract automatically after downloading, unzip the zip file.

3) Move the AppleScript file, beep, to the following folder location:
/Library/Scripts/Mail Scripts/

4) Open Mail’s Preference and select the Rules tab.

5) Click the “Add Rule” button.

6) Follow the screenshot below to give the new rule its appropriate description and settings:

7) You’re all set. Your mail should start to beep for any new arriving messages.

Enjoy!

Netflix Subtitle on Apple TV!

Yes!! Finally, with the new iOS 5 (Apple TV version: 4.4) update push to Apple TV (2nd generation) — You can now watch TV shows and some movies with subtitle! The quality of subtitle font is far superior than Wii, I think. Thanks for making this happen!

To enable subtitle in Netflix on your Apple TV (2nd Generation):

1. Select Settings
2. Select Audio & Video
3. Select Subtitle Language
4. Enable by selecting ENGLISH

That’s it! Enjoy!

Support AT&T and T-Mobile Merger

I’m targeting this message to Deaf and Hard of Hearing folks:
I’m Deaf myself and I support this merger.  So, yes — Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities that rely on data connection should support this merger as well. With this merge, we will be able to do many things wirelessly using AT&T new 4G LTE service. For example, making and receiving video phone calls!! Both point-to-point and video relay service (VRS) video phone calls. 4G network is better than 3G network, of course!

Why does AT&T want to merge T-Mobile?
So they can get more airwaves spectrum and provide greater coverage for everyone.  If they do it on their own, it will get very expensive and the deployment time will be very slow. Along with that slow deployment time, the price for the service may get more expensive and that cost will get passed onto consumers. WIth the T-Mobile merger, the price for the service should remain very competitive, because it may cost AT&T a lot less and they will not have to pass the cost of deployment onto the consumers like us to pay for it. After the merge, we should see 4G LTE coverage much sooner.

Better coverage with 4G LTE (super fast data speed) connection:
According to the press release from AT&T, before merge the coverage on 4G LTE is limited, usually in big cities.  However, after the merge, the coverage will reach to 97% of America, including small towns and rural communities. I encourage you to check this webpage out to see what the coverage looks like, both before and after the merge.

I encourage you to read more about this merger and see why it will be important for deaf and hard of hearing community. Questions? Let me know and I will try my best to answer them.

I left a comment at FCC expressing my support of this merger. Please do the same on your part by going online at FCC and enter Proceeding Number 11-65. The more they get from Deaf and Hard of Hearing folks like us, they will see that the merger will benefits us in long run.
